(AFX International Focus) -- Bayer AG (NYSE:BAY) said its low-dose oral contraceptive YAZ received regulatory approval in the Netherlands, both for preventing unwanted pregnancies and treating moderate acne. This regulatory nod -- the first in Europe -- will serve as a reference in the EU mutual recognition procedure that Bayer plans to launch in order to gain Europe-wide marketing approval. A spokeswoman for Bayer's healthcare unit said the procedure will be initiated 'as soon as possible,' but said she cannot say how long it will take for it to be completed. YAZ has been on the US market since April 2006 and posts the highest growth rate among brand-name contraceptives. It was also approved earlier this year in the US to treat acne. In 2006 the yasmin family of contraceptives, including YAZ, Yasmin and Yasminelle, posted sales of 794 mln eur.
